Somerset Sustainable Futures

Food

Sustainable food means less waste, fewer chemicals, saving water, and choosing local foods to reduce environmental impact.

How can technology help us waste less food?

Technology can help us waste less food by making it easier to track, store, and share what we have. Smart fridges and apps can remind us when food is about to expire, suggest recipes using what’s already in the kitchen, and help plan meals more efficiently. In shops and restaurants, technology can monitor stock levels to avoid overordering, and connect surplus food with local charities or customers. These tools help reduce waste, save money, and protect the environment.

Spotlight on ABP

As the largest employer in Langport, ABP strive to have a positive influence on THE local community. Over the last few years, ABP have developed and completed a number of initiatives.

Planting Trees
ABP recognises that the world needs trees after centuries of damage and deforestation, the Langport site sits by a stream and the area tends to flood each year. Trees can be used as a flood defence, reducing the amount of rainwater entering watercourses, in turn lowering the likelihood of rivers bursting their banks and flooding happening in low lying areas. ABP have an annual target of planting or donating 500 trees to the local community. In 2022 there was 730, in 2023 they achieved 5051 and in 2024, 2610 trees were planted locally.

Rewilding Area
ABP have created a rewilding area, the goal was to have an area that both the community and employees could enjoy, a place used to boost energy and to keep people close to nature. One hectare of their land was used and kept as a natural habitat for many different species and home for different insects and animals. ABP planted 50 trees in this area and created safe corridors which allows the local community and employees to use this area, not only to relax but also to learn more about the nature around us. Further to this, they have added some picnic tables and benches, all made of 100% recycled materials, to welcome visitors to the area.

The mission for ABP Langport is to promote initiatives that can help the local community. This not only helps with building relationships, but it is crucial to the understand the needs of the local community and where possible ensure that we promote our corporate social responsibility.
