Somerset Sustainable Futures

Description

What We Do

Exmoor National Park Authority (ENPA) works to conserve and enhance the natural beauty, wildlife and cultural heritage of the National Park, to promote opportunities for the understanding and enjoyment of the special qualities of the Park by the public, and to foster the economic and social well-being of local communities within the National Park.

Working in partnership with landowners and managers and a wide range of other organisations we are taking positive action to work towards a more nature-rich Exmoor. We promote coordinated and landscape-scale nature recovery – a huge effort to reverse the decline in nature and help our native species to recover. This is also a key part of our response to the climate emergency showing how nature-rich landscapes can both combat and be resilient to the changing climate. We have a Climate Emergency Action plan, which can be found on this page: https://www.exmoor-nationalpark.gov.uk/enpa/key-documents. Some of our sustainable practices include use of renewable energy wherever possible (e.g. some of our sites are powered by wind or solar power), growing and using sustainable timber from Exmoor woodlands, and use of electric vehicles. We also undertake work that directly responds to the climate crisis, such as restoring peatlands to keep carbon locked up, planting trees to sequester more carbon, and doing natural flood management to reduce downstream flooding.

Through the Exmoor Pioneers programme (exmoor-nationalpark.gov.uk/nature-and-landscape/exmoor-pioneers-project), we are able to offer opportunities related to careers education (e.g. careers talks, group work experience visits) to schools within 20km of the National Park boundary (i.e. West Somerset area). Our Learning and Engagement team (https://www.exmoor-nationalpark.gov.uk/exmoor-for-everyone/learning) are able to support outdoor learning visits for schools, as well as host residentials at the Pinkery Centre for Outdoor Education.
